What is a billing increment?

The smallest unit you bill in, always rounded up. Law firms use tenths of an hour — six minutes — so a two-minute call bills as 0.1. Consulting more often uses 15 minutes. The choice changes an invoice by 10-20% on short entries.

What is utilisation?

Billable hours as a share of all logged hours. Professional-services firms typically target 70-80%; the rest goes on admin, sales and the work nobody pays for directly. The effective rate — total billed divided by all hours worked — is the number that actually matters.
